Cytotechnologist

Per-Diem, Various Days/Shifts.

Pay range is between $31.07-$46.61/hr + Per Diem Differential, depending on years of relevant and like experience.

POSITION SUMMARY

• Performs microscopic examination and diagnosis of benign conditions and abnormalities in cell samples from various body sites.

• Performs cytopreparation and assists at fine needle aspirations when required.

• Is involved in quality assurance program and cytology continuing education.

• Assists in maintaining departmental work flow, turn-around time and compliance.

• Responsible for customer service and education.

  JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  Education or Formal Training

  1. Have a Bachelor of Science from an accredited university.

  2. Per HHS:

  (A). Have graduated from a school of Cytotechnology accredited by the committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation or other organization approved by HHS; or

  (B) Be certified in Cytotechnology by a certifying agency approved by HHS; or

  (C) Before September 1, 1992- (C1) Have successfully completed 2 years in an accredited institution with at least 12 semester hours in science, 8 hours of which are in biology and (Ci) have had 12 months of training in a school of Cytotechnology accredited by an accrediting agency approved by HHS; or

  (Cii) Have received 6 months of formal training in a school of Cytotechnology accredited by an accrediting agency approved by HHS and 6 months of full-time experience in Cytotechnology in a laboratory acceptable to the pathologist who directed the formal 6 months of training; or

  (C2) Have achieved a satisfactory grade to qualify as a cytotechnologist in a proficiency examination approved by HHS and designed to qualify persons as cytotechnologists

  1. Bachelors Degree in Cytotechnology, copy of academic degree or transcript required; or certified in Cytotechnology by a certifying agency approved by HHS.

  2. Liquid-based Pap test certification.

  3. Certificate from Board of Certification (ASCP) as a Cytotechnologist (on or after January 1, 2004).

  Knowledge, Skill and Ability

• Manual dexterity, visual acuity, and an exceptional ability to sit and concentrate for at least 2 hours

• Demonstrate use of the accepted cytological criteria and Bethesda reporting terminology.

• Conforms to departmental policy and job requirements

• Ability to work accurately and efficiently under pressure

  WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES

  Physical demands for the cytotechnologist include manual dexterity to successfully operate a standard light microscope, visual acuity to accurately screen specimen slides, and the ability to sit and concentrate for a duration of at least 2 hours.

  ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  Position Duties and Standards:

• Under the general direction of a pathologist, determines final microscopic diagnosis on gynecologic cell samples which are within normal limits and gives the preliminary microscopic diagnosis on abnormal gynecologic and all nongynecologic cell samples.

• Maintains current reporting terminology for cytologic diagnoses.

• Documents information on HR and 10%QC rescreen specimens on QC log sheet and submits with the worksheets to senior cytotechnologists.

• Reviews QC specimens returned by senior cytotechnologist and submits comments within 24 hours.

• Process specimens using ThinPrep techniques and provide on-site assessment of adequacy for Non-Gyn fine needle aspirations (FNAs) in the Ultrasound, CT, EUS, Interventional Radiology and ICU departments as requested.

• Performs clerical duties when requested.

• Maintains microscope and other laboratory equipment in optimal operating condition.

• Maintains proficiency in the field.

• Maintains clean and orderly work area 90% of the time.

• Observes safety regulations and other related hospital policies.
